Aim and scope:

The Nigerian Journal of Physiological Sciences (NJPS) is a peer-reviewed journal of the Physiological Society of Nigeria that publishes high-quality research contributing to the understanding of physiological processes in health and disease. The journal aims to advance knowledge in the physiological sciences by providing a platform for the dissemination of original research, systematic and narrative reviews, and other scholarly contributions addressing fundamental, applied, and translational questions in physiology and related biomedical disciplines.

The NJPS welcomes research spanning all areas of physiology, including but not limited to cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, reproductive, neurophysiology, exercise and environmental physiology, as well as cellular, molecular and integrative physiology. The journal also welcomes studies addressing pathophysiological mechanisms, metabolism, neuroscience, ageing, and interactions between physiological systems where these contribute to understanding normal or disease-related biological function.

The journal encourages multidisciplinary and translational research that connects physiological mechanisms with human health and disease. Studies involving human participants, experimental animals, cellular and molecular models, and other appropriate experimental systems are considered, provided that they address clearly defined physiological or pathophysiological questions and meet appropriate ethical and methodological standards.

The NJPS seeks to serve researchers, academics, clinicians, and other professionals in the physiological and biomedical sciences globally, with particular emphasis on research relevant to human health and the advancement of physiological science.

Guidelines for Authors

Authors intending to submit manuscripts must adhere to specific formatting rules and citation styles provided in our publication guidelines. Please review the entire manuscript submission guidelines before submitting your work.

The Nigerian Journal of Physiological Sciences accepts full-length original research articles, short communications, and reviews for publication, provided they are not under consideration elsewhere. The submission of manuscripts to NJPS will be taken to imply that no similar article has been published or, in the event of acceptance by the journal, will be published elsewhere. Manuscripts should be written in clear, concise English and should conform to the specified instructions listed below. Manuscripts that are not adequately prepared will be returned to the authors.

SUBMISSION

Online Submission

Only the electronic version of manuscripts will be accepted. All articles should be electronically submitted to the online submission and tracking portal of NJPS at the following website: www.njps.physiologicalsociety.com.

Online manuscript submission: All manuscripts must be submitted online through the new website at www.ojshostng.com/index.php/njphysiologicalsciences. For first-time users: Please click the Register button from the upper menu and enter the requested information. On successful registration, you will be sent an email indicating your username and password. Print a copy of this information for future reference. Note: If you have received an email from us with an assigned user ID and password, or if you are a repeat user, do not register again. Just log in. Once you have an assigned ID and password, you do not have to re-register, even if your status changes (that is, author, reviewer, or editor). Authors: Please click the log-in button from the menu at the top of the page and log in to the system as an Author. Submit your manuscript according to the author's instructions. You will be able to track the progress of your manuscript through the system. If you experience any problems, please contact the Managing Editor at editornjps@gmail.com

Submission as e-mail attachment: In case of difficulties in uploading manuscripts, authors may submit articles via e-mail to editornjps@gmail.com. This alternative submission mode implies that the uploading of such manuscripts will be done by the editorial office, without the authors enjoying certain privileges, such as choosing their usernames and passwords.

FORMAT OF MANUSCRIPTS

(a) Each manuscript must be typed on one side of A4-sized paper in double-line spacing with wide margins.

(b) The title page should include the full title of the manuscript (not more than 18 words), name(s) and affiliation(s) of the author(s) and Name, address, telephone (including the mobile phone number), and email address of the corresponding author.

Note: The corresponding author should include an institutional email address on the title page. All listed authors should have contributed to the manuscript substantially and have agreed to the final submitted version. Authorship should be based on four criteria, as contained in the ICMJE guidelines (https://www.icmje.org/recommendations/browse/roles-and-responsibilities/defining-the-role-of authors-and-contributors.html ).

(c) The page following the title page should contain a summary and up to six keywords. A short running title (not more than 50 characters) should also be provided. The abstract should capture the background for the study, aim of the study, method adopted, results and conclusion. The abstract should not be more than 250 words

(d) Introduction: This should be as concise as possible and contain a clear statement of the problem, a review of relevant literature, and the aim(s) of the research. The authors should cite only relevant references and avoid detailed historical introductions.

(e) Methods: Sufficient detail must be provided to enable the reproducibility of the work. The authors should describe techniques, cell/animal models used, including the source of cells utilized (species, strain, sex, race, age of donor) and lists of reagents, chemicals, and equipment, as well as the names of manufacturers and country (include the city where necessary). Also in this section, the authors should describe the power calculations and/or statistical methods used to determine the sample sizes and to evaluate the data. For large datasets, also state the tests used to determine if the data are normally distributed or not. For investigations involving humans or animals, a statement of protocol approval from an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), or an equivalent statement, must be included and the institutional affiliation of the review board should also be stated.  When reporting experiments on human subjects, authors should indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation (institutional and national) and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 2008 and 2024.

(f) Results: Should include experimental data and avoid discussion of significance. For all statistics, include the n values used in computation. For representative results, report the number of times that the measurements were repeated. Where relevant, provide exact values for both significant and non-significant p-values. For t-tests, provide t-values and degrees of freedom. For ANOVAs, provide degrees of freedom.

(g) Discussion: Should be related to the results presented. Excessive speculation must be avoided.

(h) Acknowledgement: This section should be brief. Include the names of those who contributed to improving the paper’s quality (but not qualified for authorship). Names or numbers of grants may be acknowledged.

(i) Figures and Tables: This should be kept to the minimum necessary to convey essential data. References to tables and figures should be in Arabic numerals. Their desired positions should be indicated on the left-hand margin of the manuscript. Good quality glossy prints of photographs and line drawings should be supplied in the desired final size (300 dpi). Lettering on line drawings should be at least 2 mm high for clarity. Previously published figures are not acceptable, except if accompanied by written permission from the editors. The figure numbers, authors' names and "Top" should be indicated on the back of each illustration. Figure legends should be typed on separate sheets. Tables should be typed (also double-spaced) on separate sheets and numbered in sequence in Arabic numerals. A heading must be supplied with each table.

(j) Author contributions: You may include a statement that specifies the individual contributions of each co-author.

(k) Disclosure on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI): Authors are required to disclose the use of artificial intelligence modules, including Large Language Models, at any stage of the reported research or manuscript writing (e.g., idea generation, hypothesis development, literature search and/or summarization, design, data collection/cleaning/preprocessing/auditing, quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis, image generation, editing or rewriting of segments of the manuscript including of reference lists). A negative statement is also required in cases where no AI was used throughout the research cycle. The journal does not support the use of AI in drafting manuscripts, generating datasets, or manipulating data.

(l) References: In-text citations should include the authors' names and the year of publication. For papers with three or more authors, use et al. At the end of the paper, references should be listed alphabetically. Papers with three or more authors should be listed chronologically. Include the opening and closing page numbers, the full title of the paper, and the names of all co-authors. For example:

Journal:

Reid, H. L. and Obi, G. O. (1982). A study of erythrocyte deformability in sickle cell disease. Trop. Geogr. Med.34: 43 - 46.

Book:

Jennett, W. B. (1968). Blood flow techniques in clinical neurosurgery. In: Bain, W. H. and Harper, A. M. (eds). Blood flow through organs and tissues. E. S. Livingston Ltd., Edinburgh, pp 349 - 354.

If more than one paper by the same author or team of authors was published in the same year, the letters a, b, and c, etc., should follow the year—e.g., Adigun (1987a) in both the text and the references list.

Figures and illustrations in Microsoft Excel are preferred. Only text files (without formats) should be submitted; figures and images scanned onto other packages will not be accepted.

REPRINTS: An electronic copy of the reprint file in PDF format will be sent along with copies of the journal to the corresponding author for distribution to co-authors. Additional copies should be ordered during the final submission.
