Dendriform pulmonary ossification with lymphocytic thyroiditis in a young Nigerian woman: original report of an association

Background: Diffuse pulmonary ossification is a relatively rare disease characterized by the presence of small bone fragments within the lung tissue. Patients are generally asymptomatic, but when symptomatic, diffuse pulmonary ossification is usually associated with other pulmonary diseases such as interstitial pneumonia, fibrosis, or bronchiectasis.

Material and method: We report the case of an asymptomatic 45- year old female Nigerian woman seen at autopsy.

Results: Histology surprisingly revealed lymphocytic thyroiditis, in addition to confirming dendriform pulmonary ossification and background focal interstitial pulmonary fibrosis.

Conclusion: The association of Diffuse pulmonary Ossification with lymphocytic thyroiditis has not been previously reported.

Keywords: Diffuse pulmonary ossification, lymphocytic thyroiditis, African female
